12 Ways to Organize Your Laundry
1. Develop a system and follow it consistently. Allow your family one month to adjust to it before you alter it.
2. Enlist your family's help. Make each person responsible for transporting their clothing to and from the laundry room. Even a five-year-old can handle that task.
3. Let children help you with the laundry. It's the best way for them to learn.
4. Do all your laundry in one day OR do a couple of loads each evening -- whichever works better for you.
5. Take the lids off your hampers. Make it easy to put dirty clothes where they belong.
6. Have a hamper in each room. However, if you have enough space, place all hampers in the laundry room. Label them according to wash loads (whites, towels, jeans, dark colors,....). Have each person sort their clothes into the hampers each
night. Wash a load whenever a hamper is full enough.
7. Teach everyone in the family to make a decision about each piece of clothing as they take it off. There are three options: clean (return to closet), hang to air (designated
place) or dirty (hamper).
8. Keep a backup supply of detergent, softener and stain remover. When you open the last one, add it to the grocery
list. Laundry items are so expensive it pays to stock up whenever there is a sale.
9. Pick up a good stain remover chart and POST it in the laundry room.
10. Have a designated place for items which need mending. Every week or month, mend them or drop them off at the
seamstress.
11. Hang a bag in your closet or in the laundry room for dry clean only items. Set up a routine to drop off and pick up on certain days each month. Some dry cleaners will even deliver.
12. Keep a small basket in the laundry room for found items such as money and buttons. Use another one for
mate-less socks since they will probably show up next time.

BACKYARD GRILLING TIPSArleen M. KapturBarbecue season is here and everyone wants to light that fire and charcoal their next meal. A few tips might prevent your entree from becoming the next Burnt offerings to the gods.
Make sure that your grill is on a flat surface away from shrubs, grass or any flammable
material. Check the vents to make sure that ashes are not clogging them from any previous meal preparations. Use lighter fluid starter but never gasoline or kerosene. Never wear clothing with sleeves that might catch on fire. Short sleeves are the best.
How much charcoal to use - this depends on how big your grill is, what kind of food you are preparing and weather conditions. If there are strong winds, cold temperatures or if is very humid out you will need more charcoal to get a good fire going. A rule of thumb - it takes about 45 briquets to grill 6-8 burgers.
If you dont have a grill thermometer, you might try this. Do not let a child do this and be very careful as you would not want to get burned. Hold your hand, palm-side-down just above the grill. Count one thousand one, one thousand two, and so on. If you keep your hand in place without pulling it away for 2 seconds it is a very hot fire (375), 4 seconds its a medium fire (300-350) and 5 seconds or more it is a low fire (200-300). Once again use reasonable caution when testing the heat.
If you would like to try some of the flavored hardwoods, a general rule is that a little goes a long way. They should complement and not overpower. Always soak your hardwoods in water 30 minutes before using. When placed in your grill, they should smolder and smoke but not burn. Grapevine cuttings give great flavor as do shells from nuts such as almonds, and pecans. Small bunches of dried herbs soaked in water will add fragrance as well as flavor. Rosemary, bay leaves, and oregano are great on a grill.
To line your food with those great marks just like you see in magazines, allow the grid to heat thoroughly before adding the food.
Some food safety tips: Always serve cooked food from a grill on a clean plate - never the one that held the raw food. In hot weather never leave food out longer than 1 hr. and the old adage keep hot foods hot and cold food cold applies whenever you cook outdoors.
One last hint - the secret to evenly cooked vegetables on a kabob is to parboil starchy vegetables before they are threaded on a skewer.
Sauces: steaks and chops - baste with sauce after you have flipped the meat for the last time, about the last 3 mins. of grilling;
Chicken - baste the last 10 mins.
Hot dogs/sausage - baste the last 5-6 mins.
However seasoned oils may be brushed during the entire time the entree is grilling.
With just a few of these hints, you are on your way to a summertime of great outdoor eating and your grilled food will make you proud.
ENJOY!

This month we celebrate CHILDRENS DAY. We already have a Mothers Day, Fathers Day, and a Grandparents Day. Why should we have a Childrens Day? Dont we give the young ones enough attention in everyday life? We cater to their needs, give up needed sleep and relaxation so we can spend quality time with them. The media exalts their deeds, whether good or bad. They are featured in magazines, books, newspapers, and on television. So why a Childrens Day?
Those of us who are truly blessed with children can attest to the fact that they are never clones of ourselves. Surely, on more than one occasion, we wish they could do some of the things we did as children, or enjoy some of the games, hobbies or interests we had. We even encourage this with gifts of whatever we liked, or the dreams we pursued. Somehow they manage to go on their merry way, and leave us standing in the dust to hope that they will be happy with the lives they have chosen. If you have more than one child, then multiply these feelings by just as many.
The world is run by adults. We make the laws and we enforce them. We create the products and we market them. We decide who does what and when. We tolerate some behavior and condemn others. We judge, decide, and act as adults.
Now enter the world of a child. It is as colorful as a box of crayons, as bright as the sunshine, and as warm as a favorite quilt or blanket. In the heart of a child lives hope, dreams, goals, ambitions, and destinations. These heart-held attributes change with time and sometimes when these children reach adulthood, these hopes and ambitions are totally changed, sometimes by choice and sometimes not.
Look into the eyes of a child and you have a glimpse of the destination of the world. Take them by the hand and you place yourself at the mercy of sweet smiles, bear hugs and moist kisses. They may smudge you with dirty hands yet those fingerprints leave a mark of confidence that the world will continue to turn and there is a chance that it will get better.
Whether you have children of your own or have the opportunity to be friends with the children of other people, dont miss out on the challenges they freely give and the dreams they will paint your life with. Children use imagination if given the chance, and opportunity if you open the door. They dance with the wind and skip through the raindrops. A child always sees the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, where as adults we may even miss the rainbow. They listen to our tales, and they go on to create their own. The little ones will sit with us by a quiet stream and while we take a much deserved nap, they dream of what will be and how they will make it happen.
A child is a mixture of generations before them and yet they have their own distinct impact on the future. They may be small in statute but they are giants in creativity. They can fly on a magic carpet as easily as we drive a car. They can spin tales of delight, while we lament the past. Children climb the ladder of life and hope to reach their castles in the sky. They are clever, original, and have a vision that they carry in their souls.
Where is the point that we change from being the miracle of a child to the practical, down-to-earth, adult that tolerates no nonsense, is too busy to watch a firefly, and misses the delight of a spider spinning his web? I dont believe everyone attains this transformation at the same time. Some blame it on life while others point to their parents, environment, or even their heritage. If we find that we can no longer sit down and find humor in a misshaped clay figure, or realize that the crayon marks are not outside the lines, but that they are only an expansion of what could possibly be, then take a child by the hand and let them lead you back into a realm where anything is possible and everything is probable. Enter the land where everything lends itself to be transformed into whatever you would like it to be.
So, why do we have a Childrens Day? Could it possibly be because we realize that we are children for such a short time and we are adults for the rest of our lives? Do we feel in our hearts that we have to step back into a world where color, sparkle, and enchantment allows us to reclaim dreams, renew our hopes, and a small hand will help us find ourselves? Are we really celebrating children or does the world need to realign its visions and build better castles in the sky? Isnt Childrens Day really a day for the whole world to appreciate life and really see what it has to offer? Are we finally beginning to realize that we carry our childhood in our hearts and that when we rekindle our acquaintance with what we were, our steps are a little lighter, our smiles are brighter, and our world resembles a box of crayons.

Fathers Day - stores are filled with gift ideas and cards. There are special programs dedicated to honoring fathers. Yes, fathers are a very special group of people.
This is an open letter to each and every father out in the world. This is directed at you if you currently are living and raising your children, your children are grown, or you have fathered a child but do not have the pleasure of being an integral part of that childs life. Also, if you are a father and do not have or want any contact with a child that carries your physical attributes, this is for you.
A child is a unique combination of genes. Some are from the mother and some are contributed by the father. There are previous generations that also are taken into account. In other words, this child is a burning emblem of civilization and is given the responsibility of carrying the torch of the world to its resting place.
There is so much more than scientific endowments. There are emotions, hopes, dreams, and aspirations. A child is a mirror that reflects only the best of what mankind is capable.
of creating. It is history in the making, a promise for the future, and the pride of the beholder. A child is a complicated assortment of atoms and molecules, as well as a simple solution to loss of hope. You can dream with a child, and grow in awareness of everything around you. Miracles abound in life with the gift of innocence. Time comes to a standstill and our daily activities are sidestepped so we can look at an insect and marvel, or see a bird and truly see it for the first time. Giggles, hugs, and tickles wrap up a perfect day. We are one step closer to perfection and yet the small hand of a child holds the keys.
Their steps are tiny and the road is long. They have endurance and capabilities we can only marvel at. A child is simplicity dressed up in its finest.
Missed opportunities of being with your child are irretrievable. Your child will never go back in time no matter how many times you do. Only their shadows remain to haunt and point an accusing finger. If you are not a vital part in your childs life, there will always be a void that no one else can ever fill. This space in the soul of a child will ache and be painful for as long as the child lives. Only your touch, your attention, and only you can soothe and cure. The responsibility is great but the rewards are incomprehensible. You are not complete if there is a void in your childs life.
Taking a rocket to the moon is childs play when compared to raising a child to adulthood. There are no owners manuals and no guarantees. There are only promises and
assurances of tomorrow. Expectations may vary but there are no mistakes. You do the best you can and that is all that is asked. Mistakes also pave the way for growth but absence builds the roadblock. Walls of years of neglect can be torn down with a kiss or an embrace. Past disappointments are just that - the past. It may take time to completely undo what it may have taken years to build but the labor is worth it. Your reflection will
always be in your childs eyes and your lifeblood flows in their bodies. Their hearts are equipped to forgive and forget, but they need to know you care. Feelings and emotions can be mended, but abandonment is an open sore that never heals.
On Fathers Day take the time to know your child, be a vital part of his/her existence and be grateful that you have contributed to the building of that rocket to the moon.

WHAT ARE HEADLICE? Headlice are tiny parasites that live in human hair, feeding on blood from their host. They are a brown/red colour and have six legs with claws on them which they use to grip onto the hair.
WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? Experts believe they have always been with us. Dried eggs have, so they claim, been found on the remains of ancient mummies.
WHAT IS A NIT? The louse's egg, a smooth oval shape, slightly smaller than a seseme seed, attached to the hair, close to the scalp.
HOW LONG DO THEY LIVE? The louse survives for 30 days and the female lays 3-5 eggs per day. The eggs take 7-10 days to hatch and 7-10 days to mature, then the cycle begins again.
CAN PETS CATCH THEM? No. They can only survive on humans.
HOW CAN HUMANS CATCH THEM? By direct contact, where they can crawl from one head to another. Also by sharing towels, brushes and hats, etc.
DO LICE JUMP? Lice do not have hind legs to jump, nor do they have wings to fly.
CAN'T I JUST WASH THEM OFF? No. Lice go into a state of suspended animation underwater, surviving this way.
DO LICE ONLY LIKE DIRTY HAIR? It is believed that lice prefer clean hair, but that doesn't mean they don't like dirty hair - they like any hair. It is also not true that only poor, white people catch them. Lice are not fussy and will infest anybody!
CAN I GET THEM FROM A PILLOW? Only if you lay where someone who's infested has recently laid.
CAN THEY LIVE ON MY FURNITURE? Lice can only survive for 72 hours at the most once they've left a human host. Most die within 24 hours.
CAN I JUST USE A LOTION? There are countless numbers of lotions and potions on the market. While they kill the lice, they don't kill the eggs. Most are chemically based and can aggrivate conditions such as asthma or allergies. You can pay dearly for your products, only to find a few days later that the lice are back again.
SO HOW DO I GET RID OF THEM? To clear the infestation is a long and tedious process, but it does work. First invest in a metal headlice comb, available at most chemists and a bottle of hair conditioner (any make or price). Wet the hair thoroughly and rub all over with the conditioner. Using the metal comb, comb right from the scalp to the very ends of the hair. Wipe the comb with tissue and throw the tissue away, or hold the comb under a running tap (The lice cannot crawl back up the drain). Work through the hair in sections all around the head, paying special attention to above the ears and the back of the neck(warm spots). Repeat this process every 2 - 3 days for three weeks, by which time they should be gone. If you are still pulling nits or lice out, continue until they are cleared.
HOW DO I CLEAN COMBS AND BRUSHES? Pull off any hairs or debris, then clean the teeth using a needle or something sharp. Sterilize in boiling water. As brushes and combs are fairly inexpensive, you could replace them if you wish to do so.
SHALL I WASH THE BEDDING? This will not get rid of any lice. Give the bedding a good shake(outside) then vacuum the bedding and matress.
WHAT ABOUT FURNITURE AND CARPETS? Again, a good vacuuming.
SHALL I THROW THE SOFT TOYS AWAY? No. As a precaution, you could seal them in a plastic bag for three weeks. After that, any lice will be dead.
WHAT IF THEY COME BACK AGAIN? Then you'll have to repeat the process.
IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO STOP MY CHILD CATCHING HEADLICE? Only a few things - Don't let them share hats, combs or towels. If your child has long hair, tie it up for school (kids love to huddle together). If your child has headlice, you MUST check all other family members and treat them if necessary.
ARE LICE HARMFUL? NO! Although they're an unpleasant nuisance, lice are not harmful.
I am a 42 year old housewife with 3 children, aged 16, 13 and 10, living in the U.K.
WELCOME TO MY HOMEArleen M. KapturWherever you live, and whatever style home you have, it should be a place that reflects who you are and where you want to be.
If you live in a country setting, woodland area, or in a rustic cabin, you can create an atmosphere of comfort, relaxation, and friendship. A simple wooden or metal Greetings
sign by your main entrance will let others know that you welcome their visit and are extending a hand of friendship. Adding a nature theme to your sign gives it personalization and is fun. A bear, fish, or deer will lend a real rustic feeling to your doorway. If your hobby is camping, or backpacking, add a theme to reflect your interests -
make it truly your greeting. A welcome sign of any kind creates an atmosphere of good-will to people who come by.
If you live in a city, town, or village, you still can add an entrance decoration that lends itself to your interests, hobbies, or lifestyle. Rugged, dainty, elegant, country, homey, or business-like, whatever your choice, this is the first impression someone will see. It will give them an instant first glimpse into who you are. Remember the old adage that first impressions are the important ones. Give some thought to your sign and let it paint a simple picture. As individual as your signature is, your sign should also be personal and reflective of your personality and lifestyle.
Furnishings also should be stamped with your personal touch. They can be simple, exotic, or handed down from previous generations. Whatever your taste in furniture, let it be comfortable and friendly. If you give an impression of Dont Touch, people will not want to stay. They may admire, but they wont visit. If you have valuables, place them in curio cabinets, on shelves, or in unique places where they will come to no harm, but others may still enjoy seeing them.
Accent touches lend so much to our homes. Pillows, pictures, quilts, flowers, and so on give color, texture, and speak for the people who live in this house. Bathrooms should not be an afterthought. We do spend some of our time in these usually small rooms, and sometimes they are employed as places to relax and hide from the world. Decorate them with everyone in mind. Gear the accessories to everyone. Choose some rugged and handsome and other pretty, and feminine. If there are children, adding a whimsical touch here or there gives a child the feeling that it is their home too and they are an important, contributing resident.
Color is the most fun to work with. You can change it inexpensively and you can mix and match. Add seasonal favorites or holiday hues. Nature colors are beautiful and interesting, but favorite colors should be a major part of your scheme. Compromise always lends itself to peace on the homefront. If you choose the main color, let others pick the secondary colors. This way, however you decorate, it will be a true reflection of everyone and not only one persons choices.
It really doesnt matter how big or small your home is. Its of no real importance if you own, rent, or live with family or friends. What is paramount is that your home is you and whoever else you may share it with. If everyone contributes and has a say then it becomes a family home. If we lend ourselves to sharing our lives with grandparents and the treasures they give us, we give a definite feeling of continuity with their presence or their possessions. We also show pride in our heritage and backgrounds. Books, paintings, needlework, pottery, or whatever is important to you, display it proudly and let others admire and enjoy it. Keeping special items hidden will keep their beauty and special thoughts under wraps. Even a small child can appreciate texture, color, and he/she can take delight in pretty things or treasured objects.
Decorating where we live is really an extension of who we are. Give it some thought and go with what is comfortable for you and your family. Rearranging, redecorating, or just adding and subtracting items makes our home fun, functional, enjoyable, and a pleasure to come back to. Guests will also feel more comfortable and at ease when they visit. They wont feel that everything around them is untouchable and breakable. They will feel better, you will feel proud, and everyone can concentrate on great conversation, food, and other neighborly pursuits.
Enjoy!
